Dream
destination, "The Island of the Gods" is a corner of paradise lying
between SouthEast Asia and Oceania. Bali is an ancient, traditional society that
is still incredibly alive and vital. The basic conservatism of the Balinese has
enabled them to preserve many of their past achievements; the society remains
strong because it promotes family and communal values. Bali truly is exceptional
and you'll be impressed by the many exquisite sights and the scores of talented
and charming people you will meet. Your
stay in Bali isn't limited to the pleasure of unique tropical beaches, but it
also will amaze you by the beauty of fantastically varied landscapes made of rice
plantations, mountains, active volcanoes, lush green jungles, picturesque rice
terraces and sacred caves. The natural beauty of the seemingly extinct volcano
of Mount Batur, the Crater Lake and the ancient village of Trunyan is unbelievably
magnificent.
In
large cities as well as in withdrawn villages, the Balinese are deeply respectful
of their religious traditions and each temple is constantly embellished. Every
village has a troupe of dancers who perform to promote their village's spiritual
well-being. Dances and dramatic performances form an important part of nearly
every ritual in Bali. The Barong is the most spectacular and colorful dance, which
signifies the eternal fight between the good spirit and the evil one. You
will attend Hinduist festivals, wedding ceremonies and cremations. A Balinese
cremation can be an amazing, spectacular, colorful and noisy event: The funeral
ceremony is generally led by a priest and punctuated by a lavish offering of gifts.
For the occasion, a large bullock-shaped wooden structure is built and then entirely
covered with white drapes if the deceased belongs to a priestly caste, in black,
if not. The body is carried from the burial ground or from the deceased's home
to the cremation ground in a high, multi-tiered tower made of bamboo, paper, string,
tinsel, silk, cloth, mirrors, flowers or anything else bright and colorful. All
goes up in flames, funeral tower, sarcophagus, body, the lot, and when all is
extinguished, the families collect ashes in coconuts to disperse them in seawaters.
The
island of Bali is famous for its crafts. Ubud, north of Denpasar, is the arts
center of the island, the painter's community. Its particularly beautiful surroundings
and gracious way of life have drawn celebrities and artists from all over the
world in recent decades. Celuk specializes in gold and silver craft, Batuan in
miniature paintings, and Pengosekan specializes in larger, colorful paintings
featuring life in the village. In Megwi, you'll find temple umbrellas, in Tegalalang
woodcarvings, masks in Mas, and near Kedewatan you will find handmade quilts. The
climate in Bali is both tropical and equatorial, uniformly hot year round with
an average temperature of 78°F. The rainy season extends from October to April,
whereas the dry season goes from May to September. The
combination of culture and nature makes Bali a fascinating place to visit.
